An “ex-gay” Doc for Surgeon General?

by Lyndsey Darcangelo

Sigh. As if this administration couldn’t get any worse. It seems that Bush is trying to pull out all the stops before his run is over. We’re only a year and a half from the end of his reign, but the decisions he makes from here on out could affect us for years to come.

He’s nominated and appointed numerous corrupt individuals, liars, shady business associates and all-around scum to critical government posts. And now you can add “bigot” to the list. It’s nepotism at its finest.

According to Edge Boston, Georgie Poo now wants an “ex-gay therapy” proponent to be America’s next Surgeon General.

The Human Rights Campaign spoke out today in opposition to President Bush’s nomination of Dr. James Holsinger news_20909.jpg to the position of Surgeon General, based on Holsinger’s evident support of so-called “reparative” or “conversion” therapies, which some religious denominations promote as a means to “cure” homosexuality, but which has never received credible endorsement from any branch of the medical profession, and has drawn some criticism as a harmful, rather than therapeutic, practice.

Bush announced Holsnger’s nomination on May 24, saying, “Dr. Holsinger is an accomplished physician who has led one of our Nation’s largest healthcare systems, the State of Kentucky’s healthcare system, and the University of Kentucky’s medical center. He also has taught at several American medical schools, and he served more than three decades in the United States Army Reserve, retiring in 1993 as a Major General.”

Among other duties, the U.S. Surgeon General is charged with educating Americans about public health. Dr. Holsinger’s record stands out in stark relief to the actions of Ronald Reagan’s Surgeon General, C. Everett Koop, who defied the political right in the late 1980s to educate the American public about the medical facts surrounding HIV and AIDS, including forthright medical information about condom use that made many on the right uncomfortable.

“Dr. Holsinger has a record that is unworthy of America’s doctor,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “His writings suggest a scientific view rooted in anti-gay beliefs that are incompatible with the job of serving the medical health of all Americans. It is essential that America’s top doctor value sound science over anti-gay ideology. READ MORE

Am I the only one who is deeply concerned by this? The whole ex-gay agenda makes me sick to my stomach. It reminds me of some sci-fi movie that involves government-perpetrated brainwashing of a general population in order to secure a specific plan motivated by greed, falsehoods and power.

To think that we could possibly have “America’s Doctor,” the person who sets forth policies for the health and well-being of EVERY American, be someone who has deeply rooted homophobic beliefs is absolutely frightening.

For those of you who may think I am blowing this out of proportion, I ask you this. What if this person was a known racist?

Maybe I shouldn’t be all that surprised. Lately, this country’s priorities seem sideways at best. You know things are going south when Paris leaving her so-called jail sentence early is breaking news …

No, you are not blowing this out of proportion. I just read about this elsewhere and I’m feeling ill too. !?*&@$! (You know what that means…)

  2. Will Says:

I think I’m the only straight white guy who realizes that not only is homosexuality not a “disease”, but it cannot be (nor should it be attempted to be) “cured”. At least I’m the only one where I live. Besides, I was under the impression that the religious right folks thought homosexuality was a choice?

  3. DaveP Says:

That is terrible, this guy shouldn’t even be practising medicine, let alone made the doctor in charge of the whole of America’s healthcare system.

Will, you’re not alone, I’m another straight white guy who thinks this viewpoint is sick.
