And the two princes lived happily every after …

Monday, December 10th, 2007

Forget Heather Has Two Mommies. heather_has_two_mommies.pngMore and more scholastic books on homosexuality are emerging on the shelves of school libraries across America. And more and more parents are trying to stop it from happening.

As reported in the Washington Blade, a group of parents who objected to the discussions of gay families in their children’s classrooms have taken their case to a federal appeals court. The lawsuit filed by the parents explains why they sued after their son brought home a book from kindergarten that depicted different kinds of families, including a gay family. Another couple signed on after they found out that a second grade teacher read the class a story about two princes falling in love. (Oh, the horror!)

The parents cried that their “rights to religious freedom and to control the upbringing of their children” were violated by the school system.

I’m all for religious freedom and the right for parents to “control” (they mean “teach”, right?) their children how they see fit … but, if they enroll their children in a public school, they do not have the right to dictate the curriculum. Furthermore, if certain parents want to monitor what their children read and learn, then they should be home-schooling them. They can’t expect an entire school system to change their curriculum on account of a few students.

If you are a parent who cringes at the thought of your child reading a fairytale about two men living happily ever after (pun intended), then pull your kid out of school. Have them read books that deal with the kinds of subjects you deem educational, the kinds of subjects that you feel expose them to the way the world really is (in your mind). I’ve got news for you though. When he or she graduates from twelve years of sheltered schooling, while other kids have gained a wealth of knowledge from all walks of life, your child will certainly be a step behind the times.

Here’s the deal folks. If you hadn’t noticed, the world is changing. What was considered taboo twenty years ago isn’t so “hush hush” anymore. You’d be surprised to know that your little five-year-old is more open-minded and accepting than you are, maybe even more than you will ever be. Why try to shelter your child from reality? The fact that there are interracial families in the world is real. The fact that there are single-parent families in the world is real. And, I’m sorry to say, the fact that there are homosexual families in the world is also very real.

You shake your head at me. You say, “It’s not my reality.” Fine. Then hide the book from your child. In fact, don’t ever let them step foot in a library. Who knows what they might find! Who knows what they might read. But if you do that, then you’ll have to keep them from watching television. You’ll have to keep them off of the computer. And don’t let them have any friends either, because they might learn a thing or two that you don’t approve of from little Mary down the street. As far as school goes – what if your child ends up in the same class as the child of two women or two men. What then? Maybe it’s best if you lock your child up in the house and board up all the windows and doors. Let them out for church only. Then bring them back home where they will be safe.

Sounds absurd, doesn’t it? Well, so does your idea of banning books that deal with subjects you don’t approve of.

I know of an author who has been the subject of banned books. What a horrible person this must have been, you think. What garbage did she write about, you ask?

Her name is Judy Blume. And she is one of the most beloved children’s book authors of this era. The book she wrote that has been banned is called Forever. The reason it was banned was because it dealt with teenagers having sex.

Aren’t you glad some people fought to have that book banned from bookshelves? Teenagers would be having sex all over the place.

Oh wait. They have sex regardless.

Maybe that means that banning books on homosexuality won’t stop it from happening either. Hmmm.

Best Lesbian Love Stories 2007: Summer Flings

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

First, let me apologize for my lateness. I was a bit slow moving this morning. The Buffalo Bills lost a heartbreaker last night and I stayed up only to watch them blow it in the end. (What do we have to do to win a game?!)

I woke up this a.m. feeling a little under the weather. For some reason, I haven’t been sleeping well lately so I decided to stay in bed and refresh a bit. I don’t want to make it worse or get myself sicker. Holy tangent. Now that you know all of that I can get to the real meat of this post!

The truth is that I have some exciting news for all of you …

Come Out & Play: Chicken Soup Book

Friday, September 14th, 2007

I know when you read the title of this post, you were probably like … huh?

Let me explain.

Today’s Come Out & Play post spotlights Chicken Soup for the Soul: Celebrating Brothers and Sisters!

Why you ask? Well, because the book comes out in stores tomorrow and yours truly has a short story published in it!

It’s a great book if you have a sibling or multiple siblings. 518syw4I2OL._SL210_.jpgThe Chicken Soup for the Soul series may be corny at times, but it all depends on the book. It’s a pretty popular series and while over 10,000 stories are submitted to each book, only 100 actually make it in to publication. I’m happy to say that I was one of those 100 stories chosen.

So, get to your local bookstore or purchase a copy here.

Also: Keep an eye out for the anthology Best Lesbian Love Stories: Summer Flings, published by Alyson Books. I have a story being published in that as well. And, to be honest, that’s more our cup of tea!

Tune in every Friday for the Come Out & Play series, featuring coming out stories of celebrities, every day people, personal reflections, advice, tid bits and everything else concerning the complicated world of coming out!

Got an interesting coming out story to tell? Contact me and I will feature it in an upcoming post of Come Out & Play.

Shameless Plug

Friday, August 10th, 2007

As most of you know, I am a writer. I write poetry, columns, articles, short stories and novels all while using my creative powers in the world of advertising as a full time copywriter.

I’ve had a good year as far as publishing goes … and now I am famous.

Well … famous in Buffalo, NY that is - as far as The Hamburg Sun News is concerned.

As my publications become available, I’ll post them in this blog. Stay tuned for the publication of Best Lesbian Love Stories: Summer Flings, published by Alyson Books due out in October. I have a story entitled, The Sight of Her, which will be included in the anthology.

Hey I’ll admit it … I’m not afraid of a shameless plug!

Gay author wins coveted award

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

The author of lavlocker.jpgAmerica’s most celebrated novel about fictional gay athletes has garnered yet another literary distinction with her first nonfiction book about real-life sports figures titled, The Lavender Locker Room: 3000 years of Great Athletes Whose Sexual Orientation Was Different.

Patricia Nell Warrenwarren.jpg, whose 1974 landmark novel, The Front Runner, became an international bestseller and the first modern gay love story to become successful in mainstream America, has won the Independent Publisher Gold Medal this year for Best Gay/Lesbian book.

Chosen as one of the top independent tomes out of 2,690 entries from all fifty states, eight Canadian provinces, and 17 countries overseas, Warren’s winning entry is an anthology of historical essays which chronicle the lives of real gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender athletes over the past three millennia.

Among the sports figures featured in The Lavender Locker Room are golfer Babe Didrikson, boxer Wilhelm von Homburg, pilot Amelia Earhart, downhill skier Erik Schinegger, jockey John Damien, and 14th century jouster Jeanne la Pucelle, better known as Joan of Arc.

“These true, in-depth profiles span many cultures and countries and run the sexuality gamut,” explains Warren, “They focus on the personal stories of these remarkable athletes and their lasting contributions to sport itself.”

“My intent in telling these stories is to prove that athletes with different sexualities in sport did not just happen in recent times,” Warren declares, “It has been going on for centuries.”

Warren, who at age 71 will celebrate her 35th anniversary as an bestselling author next year, is pleased with this latest honor for her newest book, which recently became the top Gay History Bestseller on Amazon.com, and hopes it will continue to draw greater attention to the unknown contributions made to sports by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered athletes.

Although she has written eight novels and four books of poetry, and has attracted an estimated thirty million readers with her diverse literary subjects ranging from gay life to Native American philosophy. However, it was Warren’s milestone novel about openly gay and lesbian athletes which made literary history three decades ago by cracking the New York Times best-seller list as “the most moving, monumental love story ever written about gay life.” Published in 21 separate editions and translated into eleven languages to date, The Front Runner has sold an estimated ten million copies, and continues to be one of the top selling gay novels worldwide.

The Independent Publisher Gold Medal is not Warren’s first literary honor. She was also nominated for the Benjamin Franklin Award this year for her sports anthology. Her other past accolades include the Gay & Lesbian Literary Hall of Fame, the National Cowboy Hall of Fame Western Heritage Award, the Lambda Literary Award, the Saints & Sinners Hall of Fame, and the Barry Goldwater Award from the Arizona Human Rights Fund.

Settle in with a good gay/lesbian book

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

16_06_51_web.jpgSince it’s the thick of April … and April always seems to bring rain showers or in some cases (if you happen to live in the North East as I do), snow, I thought that I’d give you all some suggestions of quality reading material to snuggle up with on the couch until the warmer weather ushers in.
Get ready to sprawl out, wrap yourself under your favorite warm blanket and start reading!

According to Publishing Triangle – these are the top ten best gay and lesbian novels (out of a list of a hundred) recommended:

1. Death in Venice by Thomas Mann
2. Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin
3. Our Lady of the Flowers by Jean Genet
4. Remembrance of Things Past by Marcel Proust
5. The Immoralist by Andre Gide
6. Orlando by Virginia Woolf
7. The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall
8. Kiss of the Spider Woman by Manuel Puig
9. The Memoirs of Hadrian by Marguerite Yourcenar
10. Zami by Audré Lorde

For the rest of the list, click here.

Publishing Triangle was founded in 1988 and works to create support and a sense of community for lesbian and gay people in the publishing industry.

As for me, there’s one book that I think all lesbians should read at some point in their lives. It’s called Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown (Ranked 18th on PT’s top 100 list). It made the top 100 list but it’s number one on my personal list. It captures, quite perfectly I might add, the natural evolution of a young girl into a woman all while exploring the many facets of her sexuality. It’s brilliantly written, a true “page-turner.”

Off of the gay and lesbian topic, I also recommend The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. I hear that they are planning on turning it into a movie. For those people who sometimes see the movie instead of taking the time to read the book, this is one of those cases where you MUST read the book. It’s a well-written, beautifully crafted story that unfolds in such an intricately woven way that it almost makes the reader feel like he or she is part of the story. It also provides an inside view of the turmoil that is the Middle East and paints a vivid picture of the destruction and chaos that any war, civil or otherwise, can cause.

As for my favorite author, I love Judy Blume. Her books helped me come of age. From the highly controversial Forever, (voted most banned book from high schools in 2005) where I first learned about sex, to the simplistic humor of Freckle Juice and Sheila the Great, Judy Blume exhibits an uncanny ability to bring humor and light to topics often considered too unmentionable to mention in young adult fiction like masturbation, menstruation and sex. She took risks with her stories and dared to be so candid when writing about things that others were too afraid to touch upon. She brought real life “growing pains” out from under the rug and into the open. And many kids, like me, loved it because she gave us something real to relate to. We could read, Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret and say, “That’s exactly how I feel.” Or “That happened to me too!”

I hope I’ve provided you with some good reading suggestions to keep you busy during those cozy rainy days as well as those lazy summer afternoons spent lying on the grass.
