Good News Moment of the Week
Are you ready for the Good News Moment of the week? I know that you are titillating with excitement! We all need a little good news now and then …
This week’s Good News Moment:
Georgetown Students Protest In Response To Alleged Hate Crime
When something happens on a college campus that strikes a chord socially and politically, it’s nice to see people come together to fight back. According to NBC, a group called GU Pride at Georgetown University marched right up to the school president’s door in response to an anti-gay attack
that occurred on campus. Philip Cooney is accused of yelling homophobic slurs while he beat another Gerogetown student with his fists.
The GU Pride organization represents gay and transgender students. The reason for the protest was because GU Pride said they were upset at the way the university chose to handle the attack and that the school did nothing to notify other students or raise awareness. The student organization is calling for more tolerance and understanding of GLBT issues on campus.
As a demonstration, the students of GU Pride hung a sign saying, “Why can’t you just be normal?” and then pelted the sign with various colored paintballs.
Creative? Yes. Making a statement? Sure. Getting your point across? Probably not. Though it did raise some eyebrows and got the media’s attention. Anytime you can do that, you cause people to sit up and listen. I’m not sure how Georgetown is going to respond to this, but hopefully it will be in a positive and supportive way.
Nevertheless, I applaud any organization that takes a stand against intolerance and social injustice in challenging the powers that be. It’s never an easy thing to do, especially when you are in the minority group on such a large campus. Going against the tide is difficult and worth recognition. Bravo GU Pride. Bravo.
