Reality Television For Morons
I remember back in the day when MTV used to play music videos 90 percent of the time. Of course this was back in the 80’s, when music videos were considered a work of art, al la Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Now, if you want to see a video, you have to go online or subscribe to MTV Two or Three or whatever number they are up to these days.
It seems that the program geniuses at MTV ignored Justin Timberlake’s plea from the Video Music Awards this past year to “Play more videos!”
Instead, they’ve gone ahead with such educational and enlightening programs as “A shot at Love with Tila Tequila.”
Excuse me while I throw up.
The truth is I never did like Tequila much, it makes me want to gag. And I’m not fond of this little show either, for numerous reasons.
First off, it’s just in poor taste as is most of the stuff MTV decides to air on a regular basis. I stopped watching once the whole “Sweet Sixteen” series debuted because the materialistic nature of the show made me realize why teenagers today are monetarily obsessed, have no manners and struggle to understand why blowing upwards of $10,000 for a sweet sixteen party is absurd. Then there was that horrible dating show called “Next” where MTV decided to give sweet, wholesome gay and lesbian teenagers a chance to “hook up” with someone on national television. Only these weren’t sweet and wholesome gays and lesbians. No. They were your garden variety horny, hormone-crazed adolescents with one goal in mind - to get laid. Add in some scripted, MTV-spoon-fed comments that aren’t only offensive but borderline “Oh my God, I’m going to call the FCC!” and you’ve got a recipe for soft porn. If parent’s in the 80’s thought MTV was bad then, I wonder what they would think now?
Second, shows like “A shot at love” (and “Next”) only reaffirm the “gay lifestyle” rhetoric that conservatives, Republicans and the Christian right spew on a regular basis. They basically promote the image that homosexuals are interested in sex, meaningless hook ups and have very little, if any at all, self respect. Is it any wonder why some people who are just simply naive base their opinions on homosexuality from the garbage they see plastered all over MTV? I know MTV likes to think they are doing the GLBT community a service by giving us more visibility on television. I happen to think they are doing us a great disservice, by airing these kinds of shows that reinforce such stereotypes.
Third, it seems that our little miss Tequila isn’t even bisexual.
The New York Post reported this on Friday -
SELF-proclaimed bisexual MTV skank Tila Tequila may actually be straight as an arrow. The gay-for-pay bikini babe stars in a “A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila,” about her search for the perfect mate - male or female. But it’s “all a sham,” says a source close to the show. “Tila has and has had a boyfriend for over a year, and she’s not really bi. She’s made out with some girls in her past, as all girls have, but she is not bi at all.” Our insider claims that MTV works hard to pretend she’s single and available because she refuses to break up with her boyfriend, “who’s like five years older than her. This is a massive scam . . .
The “scam” here isn’t so much Tequila. It’s MTV. They’ve been pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes, masquerading as a “Music” television station, when in reality they have become nothing more than a garbage pail for reality star wannabees.
MTV? Not anymore. Perhaps they should change their name to RTVFM.

Yeah, I wrote MTV off a long time ago.
I remember hearing something about the M in MTV a while back. If I remember correctly, it didn’t stand for music at all. It didn’t stand for anything.

MTV use to be nothing but music videos. I remember when I use to race home from school to watch the latest video.
Then stay up late at night to watch headbangers ball.
Yes, I’m dating myself.
